Unusual Play in Young Children Who Claim to Remember Previous Lives

Among 278 cases of children who claim to remember previous lives, 66 (23.7%) engaged in play that was unusual for their families and had no model in family members or other obvious normal stimulus. This paper reports 25 examples of such atypical play. The play accorded with claimed memories of previous lives expressed by the children when they could speak. The child’s unusual play sometimes gav...

Acid to remember

Antibodies against a vaccine vector render T cells more susceptible to HIV-1 infection, say Perreau et al. on page 2717. Their results may help explain the failure of a recent HIV vaccine trial. The HIV-1 vaccine used in Merck's STEP trial relied on a weakened form of a common cold virus, Adenovirus 5 (Ad5), to carry bits of HIV into the body. One worry about the Ad5 vector was that widespread ...

A Cluster to Remember

Based on a massive transcription factor location analysis within a single cell type, in this issue Yan et al. find that the great majority of occupancies occur within dense clusters of up to 100 factors that almost invariably contain cohesins. Retention of cohesins at cluster sites during mitosis raises the possibility that they contribute to transcriptional memory during the cell cycle.

Molecules to Remember

"Working memory" is used for the transient storage of information in the brain. In this issue of Cell, Wang et al. (2007) now reveal how a series of molecular events involving alpha2A-adrenoceptors and a class of ion channels gated by cAMP tune the responses of neural circuits that function in working memory in mammals.

A piRNA to Remember

In this issue of Cell, Rajasethupathy et al. report a surprising role for piRNAs, previously thought to act mainly in the animal germline to silence transposons, in transcriptional regulation of plasticity-related genes in the central nervous system of the sea slug Aplysia californica. The findings expand the functions of small RNAs and have important implications for our understanding of how t...
